Mowing a large lawn might be a hassle. Your neighbor’s grass is mowed to a set length and then stowed away at the end of the mow.
Is a robot lawnmower right for you? One 2019 market report predicts a 15% yearly growth rate for mow-bot sales. But today’s smart cars can’t handle deep ruts, steep hills, or lawns with isolated grass islands. They also don’t cut as well as a big-engined push mower, according to one test.
Newman Aguiar of Mowbot of the Triangle in South Carolina believes the notion is catching on. Both robot lawn mowing and traditional lawn maintenance are available via his company.
“Once consumers witness one of these machines and the technology and quality of the cut, it becomes a no-brainer. Their grass is constantly lush. It’s transforming the industry for both consumers and landscapers.
“They can offer these services and focus their labor on other parts of landscaping,” Aguiar explains.
“They can put a robotic lawnmower on their premises and keep their clients happy,” he says. “The robotic mower works rain or shine.”
How Robot Lawn Mowers Work
Who are these people? How are robot lawn mowers powered?
Roomba robot vacuum cleaners look and act very much alike. A more “Edward Scissorhands” approach is used to cut grass rather than brush away dog hair and lint.
They silently mow a preset area of your lawn on a predetermined time while running on battery power. Reverse movement and a stop option are included in most robo mowers’ safety features, and the smaller blades make them easier to travel over the lawn.
Most have a PIN code, a security mechanism that prevents thieves from using them. Rain sensors on some models stop the mower from cutting in a random pattern if it’s raining.
It is possible to set up a robot lawn mower from its control panel. Many of these cordless marvels are app-enabled, allowing you to manage them from your smartphone.
Grass “lean” is prevented by the mowers cutting in a variety of directions, rather than in a straight line. Lawns are less likely to be shocked by a scalping mow since the blades are cut a little closer together.
Smart Mows, Within Guide Wires
Nevertheless, robot mowers must have limits because they are only as intelligent as the software they are equipped with.
The Roomba vacuum’s rechargeable batteries power the robot mower’s electric mower. There is a standard power outlet outside the house where the charging station is connected.
As Aguiar explains, “The robot charges, then goes out and mows,” then returning to charge once again before heading back out. As an autonomous machine, it is able to determine when and how often it needs to mow, as well as whether or not the grass truly needs to be trimmed.
However, mowing schedules and other selections are up to you and the mower’s program.
You’ll need to place an invisible dog fence-style boundary wire around the area you’d like to mow before most robot mowers will mow it.
There is a wide pricing range for robotic lawn mowers, ranging from $1,000 to upwards of $4,000.
Robots from Husqvarna are being used by Aguiar’s company to change the way they schedule and manage clients’ properties.
It uses three razor blades instead of a standard cutting blade like a traditional mower, making a clean cut that doesn’t harm the plant body, he explains.
According to Aguiar, the main advantage of using a robot mower is the reduction in environmental impact. Using a battery-operated device saves on energy costs, minimizes pollution from gasoline use, and quiets the environment.
“They’re not talking. As far as mowing is concerned, “I’m sure most people think of the lawn care providers that are out there at eight in the morning on a Saturday,” he says.
“Lawn mowing engines emit more than 5% of the nation’s emissions. “We don’t consider the magnitude of the impact,” he asserts. In general, switching to electric mowing or robotic mowers can have a large positive impact on the environment.
In comparison to an usual weekend lawn trim, the robot lawn mower does a much better job of removing small pieces of the leaf blade than the average homeowner.
Mulching is an important part of lawn care because it helps the soil retain water and nutrients, and the whirling blades of a lawn mower allow the tiny cuttings to fall back into the soil as mulch.
Whether it’s pouring, dark, or there’s a football game to be watched, the robo mower doesn’t care. It cuts the grass in accordance with the pre-programmed instructions.
You can’t plan on bagging or striping the grass clippings because the robot lawn mower is programmed to mulch and mowing continuously.
Not All Lawns Fit for Robot Mowers
Robotic lawn mowing isn’t right for every grass.
According to Aguiar, “the perfect grass would be a connected lawn.” It’s time to put up a perimeter fence to keep our robot out of flowerbeds, around trees, and other locations we don’t want it in.”
Contiguousness is required since the robot is housed and recharged in a charging station that is connected to that cable.
It is also uncommon for a robotic lawnmower to be unable to cut across flower beds, roads, and other obstructions that divide a typical lawn into two sections.
No one wants five or ten robots on their little piece of land. “Most lawns aren’t intended for our robotic lawn mowers,” he says, explaining why he says “no” to more consumers than he says “yes.”
It’s common for us to have to “modify or build alterations to the property that make it great.”
In regions with steep hills or ditches, robot mowers may not be able to operate well, therefore the homeowner or lawn care provider would have to manually mow and trim those areas.
Robot mowers are also challenging to use on small lawns with short mowing patterns.
Modifying Your Lawn for a Robot Mower
The ease, though. Robot lawn mowers are becoming more popular, and home builders are making changes to their lawns to accommodate them.
As part of his current project, Aguiar is collaborating with a local builder to create a house that is perfect for robotic lawn mowing.
Because the blade is so far from the edge of its mowing box, a robot mower will leave a strip of uncut grass when it mows close to a fence or the wall of a house.
A brick or gravel surface, however, can be used by the homebuilder to allow the robot mower to ride across it and get to the lawn. There is no longer any need to physically trim or edge the lawn.
It is also possible for homebuilders to place electrical sockets near charging stations, lay out lawns so that a clear path connects them both, and reduce the number of obstacles to mowing in the process.
According to Aguiar, the adoption of this technology by designers and builders will increase over time and affect the way consumers view landscaping.
A lawn that requires no mowing in the future is conceivable, as long as we keep an open mind.
